11.05.2010 Reproductive-rights groups in Mexico Thursday launched a campaign urging international tourists to boycott the Mexican resort city of Cancun, saying officials there failed to protect the rights of a pregnant 11-year-old who says she was raped by her stepfather, the AP/MSNBC reports. Members of reproductive rights groups announced an online campaign directed at tourists in English, Spanish and French.
Cancun is in the Mexican state of Quintana Roo, which recently approved a law banning most elective abortions. The reproductive-rights advocates say doctors in a government hospital failed to notify the girl that the new law contains an exception for rape victims.
